The founder of the museum Henry Tate opened it in 1897. His own pictures served as the basic collection of the museum, but it was soon enriched with more pictures from both England and other countries. The solution to the blessings was the Tate-chain, in which Tate Liverpool and Tate Modern also joined in. In that way only British work can be seen in Tate Britain today. The oldest paintings in Tate Britain are from the start of the 16th century. You can see works from William Hogarth, Gainsborough, Reynolds, Stanley Spencer, Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth, Francis Bacon and many more here.
We cannot write about every single exhibition in Tate Britain, but sometimes, we decide to write a few words about some of the temporary exhibitions. You can find more information about such exhibitions further down.
