The monument, also known as “Monument to the Great Fire of London”, has been raised in remembrance of the big fire destroying most of London in 1666. The fire which started not far from the monument in a bakery lasted for three days and was unstoppable. The monument was raised between 1671 and 1677, based on the drawings of Sir Christopher Wren. It is 61 meters high (exactly the distance between the monument and the bakery) and 345 stairs lead the way to the top of the monument. No elevator can be found here. Absolutely worth a visit.
